I was fortunate to be appointed to the Spinal TIG fellowship programme with Sheffield as my first-choice centre following discussion with previous mentors and past fellows.
My experience in Sheffield has been very positive. A particularly appealing aspect of the Sheffield fellowship was to work with an experienced, influential and supportive consultant team as I looked to advance my skillset and clinical maturity toward independent consultant practice. My year in Sheffield has certainly been beneficial in that regard; learning many excellent technical pearls, but more so in advancing my critical thinking as a surgeon.
During the 12 month fellowship I have had exposure to a wide range of spinal pathology, from CCJ trauma to paediatric deformity to intramedullary tumours and have gained much from the experience.
Outside of direct clinical work, working within a harmonious team and enjoying some social activities has been a great aspect of Sheffield, in addition to many helpful conversations and tips about early years consultant life.
I will look back at my time in Sheffield fondly and am proud to have joined the Sheffield alumni of fellows.
