The nursing / physiotherapy team based at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital are integral to the care which you will receive. We support patients throughout their spinal journey from initial referral through to discharge. We organise out-patient clinics and investigations, advocate during your in-patient stay to ensure you receive high quality care, and are always available to offer advice in the long-term post-operative period.
As a team we have a wealth of experience (125 years!!) in all aspects of spinal nursing / physiotherapy including clinic, orthopaedic, theatre and critical care areas. We liaise closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary team in order to provide optimum care and support regarding braces, rod lengthening procedures, pre-operative assessments etc.
The nurses provide an out-patient clinic for post-operative patients six months after surgery, and our extended scope practitioner has clinics for both general referrals and eight weeks post-operative patients. We also provide a service to perform Formetric Scanning and Photography.

Extended Scope Physiotherapist, Spinal Team, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust

Candice Sutcliffe began her career in orthopaedic paediatrics in 2000 and has specialised in paediatric spinal conditions for the past decade. She has presented her work at British Scoliosis Society conferences and has contributed to national paediatric spine study days as a guest lecturer. In 2022, she became a Certified Schroth Therapist and was among the first physiotherapists in the UK to introduce the Schroth method into NHS clinical practice. Candice is also involved in participant recruitment for the NIHR-funded BASIS study, which is investigating the effectiveness of night-time versus full-time bracing in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis.
