This fellowship is based at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital and is aimed at Senior Spinal Fellows who want to develop a sub-speciality interest in Paediatric Deformity. You will receive intensive training in all paediatric spine pathologies from back pain and disc herniation, through to the assessment and management of complex deformity.
Each fellow is closely supervised in both clinic and theatre, allowing for extensive training throughout your placement with us. There are opportunities to attend the MDT clinics and theatre sessions at the NGH dependent on clinical commitments at the SCH. There are no out-of-hours on-call commitments associated with this post.
There is a monthly Spinal MDT where all cases are discussed pre- and post-operatively, and a monthly Osteogenesis Imperfecta MDT which is held jointly between the Metabolic Bone Department, the limb reconstruction team, and the Spinal team. We are a European Reference Center for OI, and so have over a 100 patients from the UK and Ireland who are discussed at least once a year at this MDT to ensure they are receiving appropriate care.
In theatre, Fellows will be trained in all surgical techniques used in the management of scoliosis including Selective Thoracic fusion, Growing Rod Constructs including Magec Rods, and anterior surgeries including Hemivertebrectomy and Anterior Thoracolumbar Scoliosis Correction.
Emergency admissions are initially assessed by the Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Registrars, with admissions being co-ordinated through the on-call consultant at NGH. Fellows will be expected to liaise with the Paediatric Spinal Consultants and care for any admissions to the ward. This will give the opportunity to be trained in the management of paediatric spinal trauma.
Fellows will be encouraged to participate in research and audit, and there are opportunities to increase your understanding and participation in clinical management. You will be encouraged to attend national and international courses / meetings relevant to your training.
We envisage successful Fellows to spend six months in this fellowship.

- Nb Not all theatre lists happen every week and since Covid the theatre timetable is very flexible for the consultants. There are normally two theatre lists a week and so any gaps in the rota will allow research work or attendance at STH.
